Discovery NotesThis research was designed on isolating a single virus from the environment and retrieving its DNA for sequencing. Cloudy temperate plaques were observed in a variety of dimensions. it was concluded through the Electron microscopy that the virus we obtained was a myoviridae phage with a head diameter of 100nm and a tail length of 135nm. Gel electrophoresis was preformed and it was discovered that the phage has at least 24000 base pairs. Analysis and of this phage shows diversity a unique characteristics.
Naming NotesFor this experiment, the phage we found was from the soil sample collected in the UMBC campus. We picked that location since we noticed some activity in wildlife, but is was mainly because there were squirrels in that area going up and down the trees and it seemed to be a fertile and high traffic area. So we collected a soil sample from that aria hence the name of our phage "HungrySquirrel".
