Discovery NotesThe Btk bacteriophage was isolated from a collection of soil samples retrieved from a cornfield on September 5th 2012 at approximately 5:00 P.M. On that day it was 90° F and humid. The samples were collected at a depth of 4cm below the surface of loamy soil from 3 locations within a 20 meter radius from one another
Naming NotesThe name “Whiplash” is a tribute to early electron micrographs, which showed a phage with its head bent at an odd angles from the body as if to personify the phage as a victim of a neck injury.
